The rant

I almost feel like the end of the road is what a big bite of Delicious is…in so many technologically inclined hearts. Well I mean Delicious is not fun and exciting. It is not the strawberry shortcake with extra whip cream that I love so much nor is it the good heartfelt drama that I like to strain my eyes reading. It is just that dull fickler of yester year that we once identified and raved about as “forthcoming” technology. To say the least it is packed with considerations…and not executions of thoughtful bookmarking and exploration.
Moreover…Who put that “D” in the iigo?
Courage is the ability to explore appreciate and extend a deadline you had for yourself to acknowledge the sticky note feature of Diigo and to use your since of accomplishment by highlighting the exacerbated comments of one “Wired” guru.
Overall my experience is an all American point of view chuck the boring out dated cumbersome less than Delicious and put a Ding …in your Diigo!
I did in fact enjoy using Diigo and I think I will use my Evernote and Diigo together for a happy marriage of information and accessibility. The common complaint most of us have is the “Diigo” add-ons. Why do certain software or application developers think it is okay for us to bombard our hard drives with their interpretations of “valued” software applications….or toolbars?
Come on….give me what I want and keep your free junk…If I wanted it I would have selected that for download….
Okay, so perhaps this is my modern day rant on and off subject but, someone has to whale about it!!! Speak up America and tell them ______NO MORE! KEEP YOUR CRAPPY APPS AND TOOLBARS!

HAHHAHA…okay off to see the wizard I go to get the application “a heart”! See ya soon!

Second life is flying High!

Well..well..well another life...hummmmmm...

I do declare!

I have arrived! The tower is a rock'N but, there was no one there. :-(

I thought I might run in to some of my classmates but, I didn't. I think it would be cool to have a conference in Secondlife. I mean you don't have to leave your home and you can dress for success without having to shop for hours. Well, maybe if you are not me. I had a hard time trying to get my avatar's clothes changed. I kept trying different things but, they all looked crazy. I think there should be a closet that you can go in and try on outfits.

I didn't have a hard time at all figuring out how to get the UCM's campus. I just played around until I found the teleporter. I enjoyed going to the beach the most!

A final thought… I do not believe Secondlife is a great tool for teaching kids in general as there is too much going on and there are sexrooms and nudist islands. I know the world is full of all kinds of things but, I just do not think it is a place where a child should be. I would also like to say that some of the chat that goes on is NOT appropriate for anyone…Except adults who want to participate. So, I have listed below some of the interesting places I have found to teach or take your kiddos!

Apps for living!

A is for APPLE…B is for Ball and C is for Crazy….cuz I do not have an Iphone 

I know my “C” is a little out of context here but in some ways I am left in the dust or dark…depending on what you prefer. I mean in our everyday lives we are texting, googling, and facebooking all the time but, what about the apps? I mean apps, apps, and more apps…are all over the place.

Well, maybe not for some of us who to do not own and Iphone or an Andorid but, for those “smart”

enough to purchase “smartphone” you are rolling in the knowledge!
I am sitting here thinking of all of the educational investments I have made throughout my life and feel like I could have had more fun if I had a smartphone.
I mean in my:
Search for colleges I could have used these for testing:

1. SAT Vocab Challenge
2. Kaplan TOEFL Vocabulary Flashcards
3. Math Ref
Medical Assistant program I could have used the following:
1. Netter’s Anatomy Flash Cards
2. BrainPOP for Health
3. Molecules 3D
4. LabTimer
Associates Degree in Visual Communications I could have used these:
1. Adobe Photoshop
2. Brushes
3. SketchBook Mobile
4. QuintessArt

Bachelors’ Degree in Technical Management I could have used these:
1. iHomework
2. Cheap Textbooks Price Search
3. FrostWire
4. Cole's Calculus Review
5. Formulas Lite
6. Phocabulary
7. Memory Trainer
8. LangLearner Lessons
There are so many useful apps to choose from. I mean all are fun and packet with knowledge. I think that my next step is to explore the price points for phones and service. I am excited to get the new GRE app. I have been using a youtube prep course for the vocabulary but, it would be great to have them on my phone to study at those “special” times we all have…waiting for someone…or something!

I am a little hungry…Moodle anyone?

Okay well we know Moodle is not a dish but, it was funny. Moodle the noodle… okay so it is the small things in life that amuse me, it admit it. So, how about those wonderful applications that we all have been exploring for the last week?
I have to say I have really enjoyed working with my BB application. I have been using it in another class to create my own class at there are tons of things you can do with it. So many of the “tricks” are easy to find and you can get a grasp of how to use it without watching 5 youtube tutorials on how to set your BB up. I have to say I was bored to death trying to navigate in Moodle. Every time I thought I was going to do something it was not what I thought it was. I like to play around with things and figure them out before I get to the “dirty” part of creating a magnificent artistic creation. Okay, well maybe it is not magnificent but, educational would be a key word to define my new craft class. (The one I am creating for my other class project.) I just cannot see myself using Moodle because of the lack of ease.
Moodle I am assuming has a place in our world of educational media. It is free and I am thinking that most employers would not hesitate to incorporate it into their learning platform because of the cost. In my Youtube “Doctorial” program of Moodle (because I could not find anything) I found several wonderful tutorials on what you can do with Moodle. So, I think that if I was asked about applications and what I would recommend I would give the highlights of both. I really think if you have a group of educators that are not avid technology users it might be hard to teach them Moodle. You probably would have to have several sessions to teach them the simple stuff like uploading their profile picture.
In most instances corporate instructional designers have time to research and get a, doctorial degree in Moodle on youtube. So, because it is free Moodle would probably win. In most executive positions you teach and educate your staff so this would be a great way to train.
All in all both have places in the world today but, I do prefer BB and hope I can work with it more even after my class is over this semester!

CamStudio vs. Camtasia

Well here is the tutorial I am very proud of...not because of content ...not because of creativity...but I am proud to say I finished this CamStudio project period.

I have to say that the good Lord above held my hand through that project because I could not have kept my sanity with out that loving light on my side! (Thank you again for helping me through that rough week!)

I worked on that project for days and really just got so frustrated I wanted to pull all of my hair out. I have to admit I was using the television to pacify my child.
So terrible...I know...but I had no choice as I could not figure it out during my twilight rendezvous with my computer. So, I warped my child's brain for a good week.
I have to say I am tempted to email the creators of Camstudio and ask them why they have such a complicated application. Perhaps, it is not complicated for some people but, it was for me. I am very proud that I push through the assignment and got it done! (Even after I annoyed our dear Professor with my emails of file corrections)

On the other hand I super...duper...duper...heart...with cherries and whip cream Camtasia. What a marvelous tool to use for presentations and teaching. I am incorporating it into my web resume. I think I am going to create a video "interview" with a presentation and embed it in my website for future employers to see. I hope the idea goes over well! I like having the tools and flexibility that we have gained in this class. I also like the fact that we are pushed out of our comfort zone to accomplish projects. Pure joy!!! I love this class...Big hugs to you and the world!

The Tire Iron and the Tamale
By JUSTIN HORNER
Published: March 4, 2011

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/06/magazine/06lives-t.html?_r=4#

During this past year I’ve had three instances of car trouble: a blowout on a freeway, a bunch of blown fuses and an out-of-gas situation. They all happened while I was driving other people’s cars, which for some reason makes it worse on an emotional level. And on a practical level as well, what with the fact that I carry things like a jack and extra fuses in my own car, and know enough not to park on a steep incline with less than a gallon of fuel.

Each time, when these things happened, I was disgusted with the way people didn’t bother to help. I was stuck on the side of the freeway hoping my friend’s roadside service would show, just watching tow trucks cruise past me. The people at the gas stations where I asked for a gas can told me that they couldn’t lend them out “for safety reasons,” but that I could buy a really crappy one-gallon can, with no cap, for $15. It was enough to make me say stuff like “this country is going to hell in a handbasket,” which I actually said.

But you know who came to my rescue all three times? Immigrants. Mexican immigrants. None of them spoke any English.

One of those guys stopped to help me with the blowout even though he had his whole family of four in tow. I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my friend’s big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said, “NEED A JACK,” and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up and start hitching, a van pulled over, and the guy bounded out.

He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need to brace it. Then he got a saw from the van and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over, put his jack on top and we were in business.

I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. It was one of those collapsible ones, and I wasn’t careful, and I snapped the head clean off. Damn.

No worries: he ran to the van and handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job with a little sweat and cussing (the log started to give), and I was a very happy man.

The two of us were filthy and sweaty. His wife produced a large water jug for us to wash our hands in. I tried to put a 20 in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the van and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I thanked them up one side and down the other. I asked the little girl where they lived, thinking maybe I’d send them a gift for being so awesome. She said they lived in Mexico. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could pick cherries for the next few weeks. Then they were going to pick peaches, then go back home.

After I said my goodbyes and started walking back to the Jeep, the girl called out and asked if I’d had lunch. When I told her no, she ran up and handed me a tamale.

This family, undoubtedly poorer than just about everyone else on that stretch of highway, working on a seasonal basis where time is money, took a couple of hours out of their day to help a strange guy on the side of the road while people in tow trucks were just passing him by.

But we weren’t done yet. I thanked them again and walked back to my car and opened the foil on the tamale (I was starving by this point), and what did I find inside? My $20 bill! I whirled around and ran to the van and the guy rolled down his window. He saw the $20 in my hand and just started shaking his head no. All I could think to say was, “Por favor, por favor, por favor,” with my hands out. The guy just smiled and, with what looked like great concentration, said in English: “Today you, tomorrow me.”

Then he rolled up his window and drove away, with his daughter waving to me from the back. I sat in my car eating the best tamale I’ve ever had, and I just started to cry. It had been a rough year; nothing seemed to break my way. This was so out of left field I just couldn’t handle it.

In the several months since then I’ve changed a couple of tires, given a few rides to gas stations and once drove 50 miles out of my way to get a girl to an airport. I won’t accept money. But every time I’m able to help, I feel as if I’m putting something in the bank.

Links to my SWF file for CamStudio

AVI file Link

The correct SWF file in only one part.

Well CamStudio I cannot say I have enjoyed using you. I feel like Rocky.

I have been beat up so many times by you and you’re off kilter moves that I just want to go sit in the corner…and cry. I have worked with you now for 7 days.
On some days I have wanted to burn my laptop and you with it!

But, I have stuck to my guns and ...1, 2, 3, 4 I declared war on you and all your little people who were out to get me and my shiny laptop.

Buzzlighter, a thanks goes out to you! You have kept me sane and grounded during this stressful time.Although, I thought seriously about calling Sid to do some recon work…
I have to admit that my breaking point was almost with Mary Poppins… NO YOU FLYING… SINGING WOMAN>>>
A SPOON FULL OF SUGAR DOES NOT HELP!!!!
I tried it…But I have won !!! You have been defeted!

What did help is all the support I found from my peers and on Youtube. Thank the Lord above for Youtube. I really thought that I would not get this project done on time. I woke up at 4 am to record and start my project so I could make sure to get it completed. Boy, what a mess this has been.
Now time for the dancing

I have to admit that CamSTudio was a new experience and I had a hard time getting things to work but, I am pleased that I know how it works and what needs to be done in order to get the files converted. I would suggest in the future to have some kind of actual step by step process written out if you were going to teach anyone how to use this. You will also need to use your beloved Jing. Jing oh Jing how I love you!

Web 2.0 'N it !

I have been using a Web 2.0 application for a long virtual while now… I mean I think about all the changes in tech savvy world today and figure those 3 years has to be a long time in the world of programming. It seems that every day we are getting updates, plug ins and web flashing banners that advertise “new” web 2.0 applications. Looking further into Web 2.0 and my relationship I have to say I was a bit naive in using these applications. I really had no clue what Web 2.0 application were and what classified Web 2.0 applications until I started my Masters program here at UCM. I had been using Ning, Facebook, and Twitter well before I started my studies. I just had no clue that they were in fact Web 2.0 applications. I think it was in my first semester here at UCM that I had “the talk”…haha. When I say “the talk” I had two wonderful group partners that taught me what Web 2.0 actually meant in laymen terms. I am extremely thankful to have had such wonderful partners!

As funny as it sounds I find myself thinking back to that summer term and think “boy, was I in the dark”. I have to say so many times I feel this way when it comes to technology. I think I am on top of my “knowledge base” and then something else comes along and befuddles my brain. I have been playing with all of the applications that my lovely cohorts have conquered up from the world wide web and have found a new love for creative expression. I am amazed sometimes how fun life and learning can be. I just loved making my own personal Voki. I have been highlighting like a pro thanks to the Awesome Highlighter. I have planned on using Web Poster in another class I am currently taking. I find myself always amused at the creative thinking behind the simple, yet complex programming language in these Web 2.0 applications.

Every day I find myself browsing the internet looking for a Web 2.0 application to satisfy some weird craving for creative gobbledygook to jazzy up something I am doing. I have to tell the truth and that I feel a little naked if I do not have some kind of Web 2.0 “toy” to flash at a meeting. I think most of my attendees expect to see something fun! I am extremely thankful for all the information and incite this class has given me. I feel very blessed.

I have ventured into the unknown lately and explored the programming language of Web 2.0. I cannot say I really know a lot but, it does seem as if it is something I would like to learn more about. I find myself daydreaming of applications I can create and publish to help educators throughout the world. I think the creative side gets the best of me at times but, “Under the Hood of Web 2.0” is extremely interesting. I would like to “OPP” up something or perhaps “AJAX” it. There is an array of informational websites to choose from when it comes to learning a new programming language. I just really think it is fun to know what is behind my beloved “Classtools.net” application.

Each day I study and learn new Web 2.0 applications is another day I find “glory” in technology.  I wonder if NASA has a Web 2.0 application that it has created? Humm… let me check! (Ok, this is not what we are really talking about but, I thought it was interesting.) Wow! I am amazed that I did not find anything about Web 2.0 and NASA. I actually found an article that talks about how NASA needs to “get with Web 2.0”. That is surprising… but at least they have now adapted to the social networking platform that we find so handy…even in our class!
Until next time…up…up…and away!

Let's Highlight a web document

Unable to display content. Adobe Flash is required.

I originally had another application I was going to use for my Jing project but, I only had one student so I was unable to get the overview recorded in time. I have selected the Awesome Highlighter to speak about on my Jing “cast”. I really liked the application because there are numerous times when I am giving a presentation on a new policy and need to highlight something that comes directly from a web document. Previously, I would have had to copy and paste the entire document into word and highlight it in word but, now I can do it directly on the page. I can even email the highlights to myself or a group of people if need be…awesome!
I discovered Jing at the beginning of the semester and I have been using it for various projects that I have been working on for my classes and work. I am a talker…so the 5 minute limit gets me every time. I think I might have to break down and purchase the Pro version but, besides that it is number one in my book!

http://awesomehighlighter.com/

This is the cool application that I was going to do ....
http://poster.4teachers.org/

You can read my blog "Please be my Student" the direct links and directions for accessing the information is there. This application offers an opportunity to create "posters" that are basically web pages under a worksheet. The teacher manages the created web pages. I find it exciting as you could have a themed project and ask each student to submit a page. You can really see the process working. What if you did a worksheet on WWII? You could have have student give facts about that time in history, jobs, housing, music, and the war its self. fun...fun..fun

Here is another application I will be using in the near future...
http://www.blender.org/

Sculptpaint looks fun!

_________This one is a dream come true_____________ Font Generator

My new Web 2.0 Find!!! Please be my student!

I found a great web 2.0 tool that I will be using to teach an online crafting class. Do you think it would be possible for some of you to go on and create posters to add? I just really would like to see the total package at work. I will be doing my Jing project on this application as well. It is so fun I have been playing with it all day!

Here are the instructions...

In the simplest terms cloud computing is using software or storage that is located in a virtual place. There is a server where the information is located it just is not connected to your computer by wires. The great thing about cloud computing is that you can use anyone’s computer with internet access to get to your information.

Animoto --- Let's Make Bread Clay!

Well, so many options and so little experience. I have to say that I like having more control of my end project and Photostory allows you to. Although my Animoto video did not take as long I really liked the Photostory application. I think the hardest part in this project was being able to get my child to be silent during the recording. So, in order to accomplish my audio recording I had to wake up at 5 am. The funny thing is that she got up too!
Using Animoto I was really disappointed that I could not type all the words I needed to give the complete story. In my Photostory I was able to make transitions and narrate according to the picture on the screen. This was wonderful as you get the feel of the picture and you are not rushed into the next one. I did like the automatic adjustment of time according to the narration too. It is so easy to get you on track.
I do not think I will use Animoto except for showing pictures but, it is an easy tool to have in your arsenal. I do think I will be using Photostory for a lot of my classes. It is going to be great for art projects.

Here is my first Photostory! I really found it to be easy to use!

Podcast???? I hope

My new job!

Rock' n Roll' n Lives

Rock and Roll lives!
Don’t step on My Blue Swede Shoes… Elvis Presley is a world renowned musician and artist of the twentieth century. Many of his compositions are used in everyday life like, “Don’t step on My Blue Swede Shoes”. Growing up we listened to all kinds of music in my house everything from Count Bassie to Kiss. I recall my Father having his tape recorder with blank tape ready for any new song that came on the radio that he wanted to record.
I also, recall being 14 working my first job at a local ice cream store and swapping tapes with other young employees, as a Valentine’s Day present. I think it is funny now remembering how excited I was to get my first paycheck because, I had already spoken to my Mom and she was going to take me to the store to buy blank tapes after I cashed my check. When that Friday rolled around I cashed my check at my credit union and went right to the store to buy a twelve pack of blank tapes. I invited two of my girlfriends over for music, dinner, and recording. It was Friday night music filled slumber party. We ate tacos and listened to two different radio stations and recorded music off the radio all night.
Now, I know this reminiscing brings back all kinds of memories for all reading this blog. (I am sure you can recall doing the same type of recording.) Today this is not the normal behavior of teenagers. They use backdoor sites to share and download music from the internet. This is not legal in the since of the word because of copyright and licensing laws.
What is a copyright? Why do I care?
The long winded version of a copyright is legal “protection provided by the laws of United States” to the creators of  various forms of “intellectual works” which include literary , dramatic, artistic works and included some other categorized work deemed simply, intellectual works.

Most people think that a copyright is only applicable if the work has been published or mass produced. This is a false assumption, as the copyright laws do cover works that have not been published or reproduced. There are several “liberties” a copyright holder has the exclusive right to do…
1.       They may make copies or phoneorecords of the “intellectual works” (a phonorecord is a physical object in which sounds (except for the sounds that go with a movie or audiovisual work) are fixed, such as a compact disc.)
2.       They can make additional similar works that are based on the original works. ( I am assuming that this would be like Annie (the original)  and the newly created Annie (that has different actors and the singing is just not the same).
3.       They may distribute copies or phonorecords of the work to the public by sale, rental, lease, or lending
4.       They are able to perform and display their work publicly.

There is also something called the “Fair use”, limitation. which is basically using copyrighted material to criticize or do a parody
The use of the information is given under a compulsory license
which may be permitted when payment is given with the conditions of use.
a.               Fair use
                                                                           i.      The purpose and character of the use, including whether the use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
                                                                          ii.      The nature of the copyrighted work, such as whether the work is fiction or non-fiction, published or unpublished;
                                                                        iii.      The amount of the work used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, such as using a poem in its entirety, or using one chapter from a long book;
iv.      The effect of the use upon the potential market for the copyrighted work.
Here are 3 ways you can have “fair use” in the classroom:
1.       If the use of the material is for instructional purposes it may meet the fair use criteria.
2.       If you’re using the information while in direct site of the class, face to face teaching, it may meet the criteria.
3.       Is your educational institution nonprofit?
Reviewing most of the fair use referencing sites it seems apparent that the creator has the liberty to deem, for the most part, what is fair use. There is no a certain amount of notes, words, or lyrics you can use. In most cases if it is a published work, it is best to ask permission, especially if you are writing a publican.
Some interesting information that you may not know about copyrighted information is that:
1. A copyright lasts from the moment a work is created until 70 years after the death of the author, except for works produced by a company/employer in which case the copyright lasts 95 years from the date of publication.
2.       A copyright does not need to be registered, published.
I really feel like I have entered a courtroom just to explain the information and the uses of the information. I mean when did enjoying a little music get so complicated? I just want to have a presentation that has a little, Chubby Checker in it. I love music and every note written…well except for the evil stuff.
I wish I could open my syllabus and hear “Great balls of fire” or “Hello, Baby!”. I wish I could just embed the music into this blog too…but hey… it is the American way the (once) ole’ mighty dollar versus fun.

Thank you so very much for the use of music Jason Shaw @ audionautix.com your AS-NiceAndEasy is the song I chose for this podcast!

Learning to use RSS Feed

RSS is a common term used in the virtual world called the World Wide Web. The “Net” is a wonderful tool most of us use every day to accomplish small tasks such as looking up the correct spelling of a word and its’ meaning to making soap.  The World Wide Web has opened so many doors that we have become somewhat bombarded with information. We search the net to find the most credible resources for writing papers, learning to cook, and rear our children but, what happens if we are time constricted? Have you ever had one of those days where you had literally three minutes to read what has been recently posted on a site that you frequent? Well, RSS, Rich Site Summary (What is RSS, n.d.), is the answer to your scheduling crunch.

RSS creates a direct connection to you by delivering updated information that has been recently posted by your selected web sites. For instance, if you are a “gossip girl”, then you may frequent http://www.etonline.com/, this is the Entertainment Tonight web site that gives all the celebrity gossip, if this is the case then you would want to subscribe to their RSS feed in order to see the most updated information. You can do this by selecting the RSS feed icon that is orange with white stripes. You will then get the information delivered to your preferred reader. Now, that is the next step in this world of instant gratification. What is a reader?

What is a reader? A reader is a tool that is used to connect you the viewer to information you have selected to be added into your daily activities. I selected the Google reader which worked really well for me. The set up was extremely easy as I have had a Gmail account for some time so I just had to go on and select that I wanted a reader and Gmail/Google did all the work for me. They even had a video tutorial on how to use the reader and what types of information you can read. I have to say that I do have a short attention span and Google reader is my friend to the end…now. Google reader has a built in reading feature that allows you to see what you have read verses what you have not. Each item that has not been read is in a colored box that changes after you have read it. It really makes it easy to maneuver through all of those RSS feeds you have selected to have “fed” to you.

There is another type of reader which is web based. I chose to load the Sage reader that is a part of Firefox. Honestly, I do not like this reader as it was a little tricky to install. I first had to find the appropriate site to download it, which took a couple of tries. Then, I had to figure out how it worked because there was not a “tutorial” video or write up. I might have missed it as there was a lot of typed information in the same area but, I did not read through it all. I have to say now that I have been using it I really do not care for the way it is set up. I feel overwhelmed every time I access it as there is nothing but lists of things that need to be read. There aren’t any pretty color boxes to help me navigate through the oodles and oodles of information. All I can really count on is that if it is not bold I have read it. Also, Google reader seems to be more widely recognized as in the drop down when you select to have the RSS feed.

I think that reader would be a wonderful tool to have students and teachers use in their educational experience. It would be easy to teach them how to load and Google does a majority of the work for them. Another feature would also have to be the complementary tools that come with a Goggle account. You can share documents and create view groups to work on projects. It would be easy to have a teacher update a web site daily with activities that are fed to Google reader for the student to view. The student could then go to their assigned work groups’ documents and make the necessary additions required by the posted RSS fed assignment. What about snow days? Teachers could send information for assignments via web and the feed would then connect students to it. No hassle for the teacher or the student. What about the parents? Well, it would be a wonderful way to monitor what their children have been studying in class and what assignments have been assigned to work on in groups or at home.

I have found so many wonderful sites that I have learned from just by exploring Educational News. http://www.zdnet.com/blog/education/short-on-space-and-cash-try-an-interactive-projector/4462 is a wonderful place to find new technology for the classroom and see how it can help you become more affective. Interactive learning is going international, or maybe it has always been I just had not noticed, http://www.guardian.co.uk/classroom-innovation/bett-2011-review-ict-schools-technology is showing new ways to connect with the classroom and doing it worldwide. China is really moving forward in education. First, they send their children to school at age 3, which in my opinion is the ideal age. Next, they have formed the world’s largest online learning center. I know, http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/mychineselearning-together-with-bjchinesebjeducn-launches-online-chinese-learning-for-global-chinese-language-students-114640059.html, PR Newswire is not a Educational Technology web site but, in some cases it is because PR seems to always have great articles about new technology throughout the world not just US based news.

I have always loved to learn and experience new places and things but, now more than ever I am learning new ways to improve myself and my family through the use of technology. I am grateful to have had the experience of digging in and exploring with my fellow classmates! I think the best feature I have been able to use is just keeping track of my peers’ blogs. There was a time that you would have to check everyday a few times a day to see if someone had loaded something but, now I just log on to Gmail and click on my beloved reader!

What is Open Source and How do I get FREE software?

Okay, here is my stab at open source and what it is. When a application is created it is done in by creating a program code that makes it work. This is almost like foundation of a car and the motor and parts. You have to have the programming code in order for it to work. With closed source applications the code is not included with the program but, with open source the code is included. So, it is open for anyone to look at or learn from.

With open source software programmers are encouraged to make the software their own. This is one of the reasons why the code is included because it is believed that the code can and will be modified according to the users’ liking. All open source software has to be free to obtain but, one way some of the manufactures are getting around it being totally free is to include in a package. So, you technically purchase one of the software applications and get the open sources application for free. The great thing about open source is that it can be redistributed with the updated code that the “user” has customized.

Personally, I have been using Open Office for some time and really enjoy it over MS Office. I find it easier to teach my family members how to do something in Open Office verses MS Office. My summer semester at UCM I used Open office for the entire semester and was extremely pleased at it’s functionality. I had an “upgraded” version sent to me by one of my friends that is a programmer. In his version you could do more animations in “PowerPoint” and also instant message users on Yahoo. Creative!!

I did use Netscape when I was doing my undergraduate degree but, I really did not like it as it would freeze periodically. This was cumbersome as I had two online classes and “myportal” would not post my work because of the freezing. So, in short I elected to go back to Explorer.(Side note *I went to link this and found Firefox on the site as well. I currently use Firefox!)

In order to complete my undergraduate degree I had to finish a group project which consisted of a website devoted to artwork. I am for from a programmer but, I do believe the programmers used some perl to complete some of the functionality of the back house of the site. (My job was the front.)
I did find a few different operating systems that are Open they are; Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, and GNU.

Honestly, I am only familiar with Linux as we used it at a couple of places I worked. These other operating systems I have no clue about but, if you do not know what an operating system is it is the major foundation that runs the computer or server. A few widely known operating systems are; Windows XP, Windows 2005, and Vista.
