Web 2.0 'N it !

I have been using a Web 2.0 application for a long virtual while now… I mean I think about all the changes in tech savvy world today and figure those 3 years has to be a long time in the world of programming. It seems that every day we are getting updates, plug ins and web flashing banners that advertise “new” web 2.0 applications. Looking further into Web 2.0 and my relationship I have to say I was a bit naive in using these applications. I really had no clue what Web 2.0 application were and what classified Web 2.0 applications until I started my Masters program here at UCM. I had been using Ning, Facebook, and Twitter well before I started my studies. I just had no clue that they were in fact Web 2.0 applications. I think it was in my first semester here at UCM that I had “the talk”…haha. When I say “the talk” I had two wonderful group partners that taught me what Web 2.0 actually meant in laymen terms. I am extremely thankful to have had such wonderful partners!

As funny as it sounds I find myself thinking back to that summer term and think “boy, was I in the dark”. I have to say so many times I feel this way when it comes to technology. I think I am on top of my “knowledge base” and then something else comes along and befuddles my brain. I have been playing with all of the applications that my lovely cohorts have conquered up from the world wide web and have found a new love for creative expression. I am amazed sometimes how fun life and learning can be. I just loved making my own personal Voki. I have been highlighting like a pro thanks to the Awesome Highlighter. I have planned on using Web Poster in another class I am currently taking. I find myself always amused at the creative thinking behind the simple, yet complex programming language in these Web 2.0 applications.

Every day I find myself browsing the internet looking for a Web 2.0 application to satisfy some weird craving for creative gobbledygook to jazzy up something I am doing. I have to tell the truth and that I feel a little naked if I do not have some kind of Web 2.0 “toy” to flash at a meeting. I think most of my attendees expect to see something fun! I am extremely thankful for all the information and incite this class has given me. I feel very blessed.

I have ventured into the unknown lately and explored the programming language of Web 2.0. I cannot say I really know a lot but, it does seem as if it is something I would like to learn more about. I find myself daydreaming of applications I can create and publish to help educators throughout the world. I think the creative side gets the best of me at times but, “Under the Hood of Web 2.0” is extremely interesting. I would like to “OPP” up something or perhaps “AJAX” it. There is an array of informational websites to choose from when it comes to learning a new programming language. I just really think it is fun to know what is behind my beloved “Classtools.net” application.

Each day I study and learn new Web 2.0 applications is another day I find “glory” in technology.  I wonder if NASA has a Web 2.0 application that it has created? Humm… let me check! (Ok, this is not what we are really talking about but, I thought it was interesting.) Wow! I am amazed that I did not find anything about Web 2.0 and NASA. I actually found an article that talks about how NASA needs to “get with Web 2.0”. That is surprising… but at least they have now adapted to the social networking platform that we find so handy…even in our class!
Until next time…up…up…and away!

Let's Highlight a web document

Unable to display content. Adobe Flash is required.

I originally had another application I was going to use for my Jing project but, I only had one student so I was unable to get the overview recorded in time. I have selected the Awesome Highlighter to speak about on my Jing “cast”. I really liked the application because there are numerous times when I am giving a presentation on a new policy and need to highlight something that comes directly from a web document. Previously, I would have had to copy and paste the entire document into word and highlight it in word but, now I can do it directly on the page. I can even email the highlights to myself or a group of people if need be…awesome!
I discovered Jing at the beginning of the semester and I have been using it for various projects that I have been working on for my classes and work. I am a talker…so the 5 minute limit gets me every time. I think I might have to break down and purchase the Pro version but, besides that it is number one in my book!

This is the cool application that I was going to do ....
http://poster.4teachers.org/

You can read my blog "Please be my Student" the direct links and directions for accessing the information is there. This application offers an opportunity to create "posters" that are basically web pages under a worksheet.The teacher manages the created web pages. I find it exciting as you could have a themed project and ask each student to submit a page. You can really see the process working. What if you did a worksheet on WWII? You could have have student give facts about that time in history, jobs, housing, music, and the war its self. fun...fun..fun

Here is another application I will be using in the near future...

Sculptpaint looks fun!

_________This one is a dream come true_____________ Font Generator

My new Web 2.0 Find!!! Please be my student!

I found a great web 2.0 tool that I will be using to teach an online crafting class. Do you think it would be possible for some of you to go on and create posters to add? In the simplest terms cloud computing is using software or storage that is located in a virtual place. There is a server where the information is located it just is not connected to your computer by wires. The great thing about cloud computing is that you can use anyone’s computer with internet access to get to your information.

Animoto --- Let's Make Bread Clay!

Well, so many options and so little experience. I have to say that I like having more control of my end project and Photostory allows you to. Although my Animoto video did not take as long I really liked the Photostory application. I think the hardest part in this project was being able to get my child to be silent during the recording. So, in order to accomplish my audio recording I had to wake up at 5 am. The funny thing is that she got up too!
Using Animoto I was really disappointed that I could not type all the words I needed to give the complete story. In my Photostory I was able to make transitions and narrate according to the picture on the screen. This was wonderful as you get the feel of the picture and you are not rushed into the next one. I did like the automatic adjustment of time according to the narration too. It is so easy to get you on track.
I do not think I will use Animoto except for showing pictures but, it is an easy tool to have in your arsenal. I do think I will be using Photostory for a lot of my classes. It is going to be great for art projects.

Bread Clay

Here is my first Photostory! I really found it to be easy to use!

Podcast???? I hope

My new job!

Rock' n Roll' n Lives

Rock and Roll lives!
Don’t step on My Blue Swede Shoes… Elvis Presley is a world renowned musician and artist of the twentieth century. Many of his compositions are used in everyday life like, “Don’t step on My Blue Swede Shoes”. Growing up we listened to all kinds of music in my house everything from Count Bassie to Kiss. I recall my Father having his tape recorder with blank tape ready for any new song that came on the radio that he wanted to record.
I also, recall being 14 working my first job at a local ice cream store and swapping tapes with other young employees, as a Valentine’s Day present. I think it is funny now remembering how excited I was to get my first paycheck because, I had already spoken to my Mom and she was going to take me to the store to buy blank tapes after I cashed my check. When that Friday rolled around I cashed my check at my credit union and went right to the store to buy a twelve pack of blank tapes. I invited two of my girlfriends over for music, dinner, and recording. It was Friday night music filled slumber party. We ate tacos and listened to two different radio stations and recorded music off the radio all night.
Now, I know this reminiscing brings back all kinds of memories for all reading this blog. (I am sure you can recall doing the same type of recording.) Today this is not the normal behavior of teenagers. They use backdoor sites to share and download music from the internet. This is not legal in the since of the word because of copyright and licensing laws.
What is a copyright? Why do I care?
The long winded version of a copyright is legal “protection provided by the laws of United States” to the creators of  various forms of “intellectual works” which include literary , dramatic, artistic works and included some other categorized work deemed simply, intellectual works.

Most people think that a copyright is only applicable if the work has been published or mass produced. This is a false assumption, as the copyright laws do cover works that have not been published or reproduced. There are several “liberties” a copyright holder has the exclusive right to do…
1.       They may make copies or phoneorecords of the “intellectual works” (a phonorecord is a physical object in which sounds (except for the sounds that go with a movie or audiovisual work) are fixed, such as a compact disc.)
2.       They can make additional similar works that are based on the original works. ( I am assuming that this would be like Annie (the original)  and the newly created Annie (that has different actors and the singing is just not the same).
3.       They may distribute copies or phonorecords of the work to the public by sale, rental, lease, or lending
4.       They are able to perform and display their work publicly.

There is also something called the “Fair use”, limitation. which is basically using copyrighted material to criticize or do a parody
The use of the information is given under a compulsory license
which may be permitted when payment is given with the conditions of use.
a.               Fair use
                                                                           i.      The purpose and character of the use, including whether the use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
                                                                          ii.      The nature of the copyrighted work, such as whether the work is fiction or non-fiction, published or unpublished;
                                                                        iii.      The amount of the work used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole, such as using a poem in its entirety, or using one chapter from a long book;
                                                                        iv.      The effect of the use upon the potential market for the copyrighted work.
Here are 3 ways you can have “fair use” in the classroom:
1.       If the use of the material is for instructional purposes it may meet the fair use criteria.
2.       If you’re using the information while in direct site of the class, face to face teaching, it may meet the criteria.
3.       Is your educational institution nonprofit?
Reviewing most of the fair use referencing sites it seems apparent that the creator has the liberty to deem, for the most part, what is fair use. There is no a certain amount of notes, words, or lyrics you can use. In most cases if it is a published work, it is best to ask permission, especially if you are writing a publican.
Some interesting information that you may not know about copyrighted information is that:
1. A copyright lasts from the moment a work is created until 70 years after the death of the author, except for works produced by a company/employer in which case the copyright lasts 95 years from the date of publication.
2.       A copyright does not need to be registered, published.
I really feel like I have entered a courtroom just to explain the information and the uses of the information. I mean when did enjoying a little music get so complicated? I just want to have a presentation that has a little, Chubby Checker in it. I love music and every note written…well except for the evil stuff.
I wish I could open my syllabus and hear “Great balls of fire” or “Hello, Baby!”. I wish I could just embed the music into this blog too…but hey… it is the American way the (once) ole’ mighty dollar versus fun.

Thank you so very much for the use of music Jason Shaw @ audionautix.com your AS-NiceAndEasy is the song I chose for this podcast!
